The Novelty Has Worn Off

As I was on my long run on Saturday, I was thinking about why I am writing this blog. It's certainly not because I expect people to read it (and judging by the page views, no one is!). It's not because I think my story is unique or different in any way from the thousands of other age group triathletes. It's because I want to keep a record. I want to remember how these 20 weeks felt, so I can look back on it when my memory fades. And so that, when I'm old and saggy and gorging myself on pasta and ice cream, I can remind myself that I was once a badass.

Week 3
Planned: 8:50 total hours (1:30 swim, 4:10 bike, 3:10 run)
Completed: 8:47 hours (1:32 swim, 4:08 bike, 3:07 run)

This week had some hurdles. Three hurdles, specifically. First, my youngest daughter was home sick while my husband was out of town. So yes, I brought her to the gym so I could work out. A low point, possibly, but she didn't seem to mind and hell - I'm just not going to miss a workout.

Second, I came down with a cold, not surprising since everyone else in the house seems to have some form of a bug. Haven't let that stop me, but I can tell it's not helping matters. Hoping it ends soon but without enough rest it could linger for a while.

Third, I started to get some flack from my husband about my workout schedule. (Taking my sick daughter to the gym probably didn't help matters.) At first I was worried that this being a problem now - 3 weeks into training! - did not bode well for the remaining 17 weeks. But we actually had a good talk, and hopefully have put the issue to bed.

Overall, I'd say this week very much felt like the 3rd week without a break. I trudged through the workouts, forcing myself out the door at the end of the week when I really didn't feel like it. My Saturday long run was actually ok (11 miles! no issues!) but my Sunday trainer ride was a struggle. Am really, really ready for a recovery week. Damn well better feel like one - the schedule doesn't look nearly like my recovery weeks of seasons past …
